When you think about landscaping gravels, chances are good that you think they’re all about the same. There might be some size differences, but other than that, landscape gravels don’t vary much. That’s actually pretty far from the truth. You’ll find a very wide range of gravels out there, and they’re all used for different purposes.
Riverstone – Half-inch riverstone is generally used as a decorative gravel, and makes an excellent choice for use around trees and flowerbeds, but also around other landscaping elements.
Pea Gravel – Pea gravel is round and generally polished, making it a good choice for walkways, as well as for use around trees and other exposed areas. It’s also dust-free, which is an excellent quality.
Crusher Run – Crusher run is a mixture of gravel and gravel sand. It can be used in a wide range of applications, from driveways to walkways and other installations where a hard packed surface is necessary. Crusher run is usually used to create bases, over which another material (like concrete) will be installed.
Limestone – There are several different limestone products on the market, including three-quarter inch limestone, which is ideal for situations where good drainage is necessary. All the fines are removed (dust and small particles that would impede drainage). However, limestone screenings include dust and small fragments, and should be used in areas where good leveling and imperfection filling are important.
